Species Naming
The five-spotted wrasse, scientifically named Symphodus roissali, is a species of wrasse.
Geographic Distribution
It is native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, occurring from the Bay of Biscay to Morocco, and also lives throughout the coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
Habitat
This species inhabits rocky areas, usually within eelgrass beds, at depths between 1 and 30 meters (3.3 to 98.4 feet).
Size
It can grow to a maximum standard length of 17 centimeters (6.7 inches), though most individuals do not exceed 12 centimeters (4.7 inches).
Human Uses
Local populations harvest this species as a food fish, and it is also available in the aquarium trade.
