Fundulus similis (Baird & Girard, 1853)

Taxonomic Classification

The longnose killifish, with the scientific name Fundulus similis (Baird & Girard, 1853), is a tropical marine benthopelagic fish that belongs to the genus Fundulus and the family Fundulidae.

Distribution Range

This species is endemic to the western Atlantic Ocean, where its range extends along the Gulf of Mexico coast from the Florida Keys to Tampico, Mexico.

Maximum Length

It reaches a maximum total length of 12 centimeters.

Body Morphology and Coloration

Its body is rounded and elongate, colored olive to silver with dark vertical stripes.

Distinguishing Features

It can be told apart from other killifish by its long snout and the presence of a dark spot on its last vertical bar.

Nomenclature Issue

Currently, Fundulus similis needs to be given a new binomial name, because the name Fundulus similis is already preoccupied; the name was originally used for a Gulf of Mexico population of Fundulus majalis, and is now considered a junior synonym of Fundulus majalis.
