Leptolucania ommata, commonly known as the Pygmy killifish, is a species of killifish native to North America that is found exclusively in the southeastern United States.

General Body Coloration

The fish's body is yellow, with gold and blue-green coloration toward the tail region.

Males have a small dark spot at the base of the tail, while females typically have one dark spot at the base of the tail and an additional dark spot at the midpoint of the body.

Genus Classification

This species is the only confirmed member of the genus Leptolucania.

Formal Taxonomic History

The pygmy killifish was first formally described by David Starr Jordan in 1884 under the name Heterandria ommata, with the type locality recorded as Indian River, Florida.
