Desmognathus orestes is a species first described by Tilley & Mahoney in 1996.

Reproduction

Females of this species lay their eggs under logs or rocks.

Distribution

This species is endemic to the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the southern Appalachian Mountains, where it occurs in western Virginia and North Carolina in the southeastern United States.

Habitat

Its natural habitats include temperate forests, rivers, intermittent rivers, freshwater springs, and rocky areas.

Threats

It is currently threatened by habitat loss.
