This species is endemic to the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the southern Appalachian Mountains, where it occurs in western Virginia and North Carolina in the southeastern United States.
Habitat
Its natural habitats include temperate forests, rivers, intermittent rivers, freshwater springs, and rocky areas.

It is currently threatened by habitat loss.
