Nomenclature
Craspedocephalus rubeus (previously published under the scientific name Trimeresurus rubeus), commonly called the ruby-eyed green pitviper, is a venomous pit viper species.
Distribution
This species is endemic to Southeast Asia, and found specifically in southern Vietnam and eastern Cambodia.
Subspecies Status
No subspecies are currently recognized by science.
Habitat
It lives in seasonal tropical forests, including forests that have been lightly disturbed.
Activity and Microhabitat
All known specimens have been recorded at night, in dense vegetation, often located close to fast-flowing streams.
Elevation Range
The species has been documented only at elevations below 500 meters (1,600 feet) above sea level.
Threats
While most known populations of this viper live within national parks, it still faces threats from habitat loss, as well as harvesting for use as food and to make snake wine.
