About Buceros rhinoceros Linnaeus, 1758

Taxonomy and Common Name

The rhinoceros hornbill, scientifically named Buceros rhinoceros Linnaeus, 1758, is a large arboreal hornbill.

Size and Weight

It measures 80 to 90 cm (31–35 in) in total length, with weight that differs between sexes: males weigh approximately 2,465 to 2,960 g (87.0–104.4 oz), while females weigh 2,040 to 2,330 g (72–82 oz).

Plumage Coloration

Most of its plumage is black, with white feathers on the legs and vent, and a white tail that has a single black band.

Bill and Casque

Its large bill and casque are orange and red; this color comes from preen oil that the bird rubs on from the preen gland located above its tail.

Sexual Dimorphism

Male and female rhinoceros hornbills can be told apart by eye coloration: males have red eyes with black rims, and females have white eyes with red rims.
