Taxonomic Naming

Veronica tetragona Hook., synonym Hebe tetragona, is a subalpine plant in the family Plantaginaceae that is endemic to New Zealand.

Size

It can grow up to 1 metre high, with very small yellow-green leaves that completely surround the stem.

Flowering

It produces white flowers during the summer.

Etymology

This species gets its name from its distinctive four-sided branches.

Accepted Subspecies

As of October 2022, Plants of the World Online accepts two subspecies: Veronica tetragona subsp. subsimilis (Colenso) Garn.-Jones, with the synonym Veronica subsimilis, which occurs on the North Island of New Zealand, and Veronica tetragona subsp. tetragona, which grows throughout New Zealand.
