About Takydromus tachydromoides (Schlegel, 1838)
Taxonomy and Common Name
Takydromus tachydromoides, commonly called the Japanese grass lizard, is a wall lizard species belonging to the genus Takydromus.
Geographic Range
This species is found exclusively in Japan.
Etymology of Japanese Name
Its Japanese name is kanahebi (カナヘビ); the 'hebi' portion of the name means 'snake' in Japanese, even though this animal is a lizard, not a snake.
Native Lizard Fauna of Japan's Main Islands
Three lizard species live on Japan's four main islands.
Other Sympatric Lizard Species
The other two species are the Japanese gekko (Schlegel's Japanese gekko, Gekko japonicus), which is called yamori (ヤモリ) in Japanese, and Okada's Five-lined Skink (classified as both Eumeces latiscutatus and Plestiodon latiscutatus), which has five lines on its back that are only visible when the skink is a juvenile.
Captive Diet
Accepted live foods for this lizard are house crickets, waxworms, and rough woodlice.
