About Spilocuscus papuensis (Desmarest, 1822)
Taxonomy and Naming
The Waigeou cuscus, also known as the Waigeou spotted cuscus (scientific name Spilocuscus papuensis), is a marsupial species that belongs to the family Phalangeridae. This species is endemic to the island of Waigeo in Indonesia, which is why the alternative spelling Waigeo cuscus is often used in place of Waigeou cuscus.
Coloration
Unlike all other species in the genus Spilocuscus, both male and female individuals of this species are whitish with black spots.
Conservation Status and Threats
While the Waigeou cuscus remains fairly common currently, its limited small geographic range leaves it vulnerable to threats from habitat loss and hunting.
