About Serruria trilopha Knight

Serruria trilopha, commonly known as the trident spiderbush, is a flowering shrub in the genus Serruria that is part of the fynbos vegetation. This species is endemic to South Africa's Western Cape, where it only occurs on the Cape Peninsula and the Cape Flats, extending as far as Malmesbury. The shrub has an upright growth habit, reaching a maximum height of 80 cm. It flowers between August and October. Fires kill the entire plant, but its seeds are able to survive fire events. Two months after the plant finishes flowering, the ripe fruit falls from the shrub, and ants disperse the seeds by storing them in their nests. Serruria trilopha is a bisexual plant, and pollination is carried out by insects. It grows in sandy soil at elevations ranging from 50 to 310 m above sea level.
