Taxonomy and General Appearance
The maroon-fronted parrot (scientific name Rhynchopsitta terrisi R.T.Moore, 1947) is a large, mostly green parrot.
Size and Weight
Adults measure 40–45 cm (16–18 in) in length and weigh 390–470 g (14–17 oz).
Adult Plumage and Head Features
Adult individuals have a dark maroon brow that extends over the edge of bare yellow skin surrounding the eye, and a brighter red patch at the bend of the wing.
Tail and Wing Underside Features
Their tail is long and pointed, and the underside of the wings is blackish.
Juvenile Distinguishing Features
Juveniles have a pale beak and whitish eye-rings, and do not have the dark maroon stripe over each eye.
Geographic Distribution
This species is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental in Nuevo León, Coahuila and Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Habitat and Elevation Range
It inhabits mature pine, mixed conifer, and pine-oak forests located between 2000 and 3500 meters in elevation.
