The Tucumán amazon, scientifically named Amazona tucumana (Cabanis, 1885), has an average length of about 31 cm (12 in) and a body weight between 250 and 280 g (8.8 to 9.9 oz).
Plumage Base and Scaling
Its plumage is mostly green, with black edges on the body feathers that create a scaly overall appearance.
Forehead and Facial Features
The species has red coloration on its forehead, and sometimes on its lores. Bare white skin surrounds the eye.
Wing and Lower Body Plumage
The lower thighs are orange-yellow, the primary coverts are red, and the undertail coverts are yellow-green.
Feather Tip Coloration
The tips of the primaries are blue, and the tips of the tail feathers are yellowish.
Immature Plumage
Immature individuals have entirely green thighs.
Geographic Range
This parrot species ranges from the Santa Cruz and Chuquisaca departments of Bolivia south into Argentina, reaching as far as Catamarca Province.
Habitat Bioregion and Vegetation
It lives in the Yungas bioregion, within montane woodland that is characterized by pure stands of either Alnus acuminata (alder) or Podocarpus parlatorei.
Elevation Range
Most of the population is found between 1,600 and 2,600 m (5,200 and 8,500 ft) in elevation, though it can occur as low as 500 m (1,600 ft).
