About Pygopus lepidopodus (Lacépède, 1804)
Maximum Length
Pygopus lepidopodus, commonly called the scaly-foot, has a snake-like appearance, and can grow up to 80 centimeters in length.
Dorsal Keel
It has a distinct keel, or ridge, running along the top of its body.
Coloration and Pattern
Its color and pattern are variable: it may occasionally be grey with black spots, or coppery brown with a grey tail, and many other patterns and variations also exist.
Vestigial Limb Flaps
On close inspection, prominent flaps that are remnants of limbs can be seen, which gives the species its common name "scaly-foot".
Core Distribution Range
This species is found mostly across the southern and eastern regions of Australia.
Isolated Populations
Isolated populations also exist in the semiarid area of southern Queensland, and in tropical wet Queensland.
