About Phygelius capensis E.Mey. ex Benth.
Phygelius capensis E.Mey. ex Benth. is a semi-evergreen shrub that grows 120 cm (47 in) tall and spreads 150 cm (59 in) wide. Its oval leaves can reach up to 9 cm (4 in) in length. Throughout summer, it produces upright 60 cm (24 in) long panicles holding narrowly tubular flowers 5 cm (2 in) long. The flower petals are orange-pink along their edges, with a yellow center at the interior of the bloom. Each flower has five green sepals, each bearing a small pointed tooth. The flowers often curve back toward the stem, and they grow surrounding the entire stem, unlike the flowers of Phygelius aequalis which are all borne on one side of the stem. This species has an exceptionally long blooming season, roughly six months from May to November. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
