Taxonomy and Naming

The Mareeba rock-wallaby, with the scientific name Petrogale mareeba, is a rare species of rock-wallaby.

Initial Distribution Reference

It is found in the area around Mareeba in northeastern Queensland, Australia.

Geographic Range Extent

This species occurs in the highlands west of Cairns, ranging from the vicinity of Mount Garnet to the Mitchell River and Mount Carbine, and extending inland to Mungana.

Habitat Restriction

It is restricted to the summits of just two mountain ranges.

Observable Natural Habitat Location

Individuals of this species can be observed in their natural habitat at Granite Gorge Nature Park, which is located approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) inland from Cairns.
