Taxonomy and Size
The ornate tinamou, Nothoprocta ornata (G.R.Gray, 1867), is approximately 32 cm (13 in) long.
Upper Body Coloration
Its upper body is brownish-grey, patterned with black and buff markings.
Underpart Coloration
Its underparts are tawny-buff with darker barring.
Head and Appendage Features
Its head and neck are buff with prominent black spots, it has a slender, curved bill, and its legs are either yellow or grey.
Geographical Range
This species is native to the puna region of central Peru, the Andes of southeastern Peru, western Bolivia, extreme northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina.
Habitat Types
The ornate tinamou inhabits high-altitude grassland, as well as shrubland at both high and low elevations.
Anthropogenic Habitat Use
It has had some degree of success establishing populations on farmland.
Preferred Elevation Range
It prefers elevations between 3,450 m and 4,700 m (11,320–15,420 ft).
