Native Distribution
It is native to Borneo, Sumatra, and several smaller surrounding islands: Bangka, Natuna, Nias, and Siberut.
Distribution Errors
Reports that this species occurs in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore are considered erroneous.
Altitudinal Range
This species has an unusually broad altitudinal distribution, ranging from 0 to 2,200 metres above sea level, so it grows as both a "lowland" and "highland" plant.
Color Forms
It occurs in many different colour forms, ranging from green to dark red.
Distinguishing Morphology
This species is distinguished by two characteristic "eye spots" on the inner surface of its pitchers.
Etymology
Its specific epithet reinwardtiana honours Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt.
