Naming and Etymology

Nepenthes maxima Reinw. (pronounced /neˈpɛnθiːz ˈmæksɪmə/), whose scientific epithet comes from the Latin word maximus meaning "greatest", is commonly called the great pitcher-plant. It is a carnivorous pitcher plant species belonging to the genus Nepenthes.

Natural Distribution

This species has a comparatively wide natural distribution that includes New Guinea, Sulawesi, and the Maluku Islands, and it may also occur on Wowoni Island.

Species Complex Placement

Nepenthes maxima is part of the loosely defined "N. maxima complex", a group that additionally contains N. boschiana, N. chaniana, N. epiphytica, N. eymae, N. faizaliana, N. fusca, N. klossii, N. platychila, N. stenophylla, and N. vogelii, among other species.
