About Nepenthes madagascariensis Poir.

Taxonomic Naming

Nepenthes madagascariensis Poir. (its scientific name, with the species epithet referencing Madagascar) is one of only two Nepenthes pitcher plant species native to Madagascar. The other native species is N. masoalensis.

Geographic Distribution

This species grows along the eastern coast of Madagascar. It is most common in the southern part of the island, around Tôlanaro, and can be found as far north as the Masoala Peninsula.

Habitat

It grows at low altitudes, along the edges of swamps, and in peaty or sandy soils.

Pitcher Infauna

The pitchers of N. madagascariensis host at least two species of infaunal spiders: Synema obscuripes and Theridion decaryi.
