Taxonomic Classification

The red-mantled saddle-back tamarin (Leontocebus lagonotus) is a species of saddle-back tamarin, a group of small monkeys native to South America. This species was formerly classified as a subspecies of the brown-mantled tamarin, L. fuscicollis.

Distribution

It inhabits areas of Ecuador and Peru; its type locality is located in Peru, near the confluence of the Amazon River and the Napo River.

Body Length

The red-mantled saddle-back tamarin has a head and body length ranging from 220 millimetres (8.7 in) to 270 millimetres (11 in), with a tail length ranging from 275 millimetres (10.8 in) to 330 millimetres (13 in).

Weight

Individuals of this species weigh between 350 grams (12 oz) and 400 grams (14 oz).

Conservation Status

From a conservation perspective, the IUCN lists this species as least concern.
