Distribution

The giant laughingthrush, a bird species in the family Leiothrichidae, is found in central China, far northern India, and Myanmar.

Habitat

Its natural habitat is temperate forests.

Original Taxonomic Placement

This species was originally described as Garrulax maximus by J. Verreaux in 1870, and was long placed in the genus Garrulax.

Current Taxonomic Classification

After a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study was published in 2018, it was moved to the resurrected genus Ianthocincla, where it is classified as Ianthocincla maxima.

Reproductive Clutch Details

Females typically lay between 1 and 3 blue eggs.

Incubation Behavior

Both parents incubate the eggs for a period of two weeks.
