Original Scientific Description
It was originally scientifically described as Garrulax mitratus by S. Muller in 1836.
Geographical Distribution
This species is found in Sumatra, Indonesia, and on the Thai-Malay Peninsula.
Natural Habitats
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
Historical Subspecies Classification
The chestnut-hooded laughingthrush was previously classified as a subspecies of the chestnut-capped laughingthrush.
Genus Reclassification
The chestnut-capped laughingthrush was formerly assigned to the genus Garrulax, but after the publication of a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study in 2018, it was moved to the resurrected genus Pterorhinus, the current genus it is placed in.
