Egretta picata, commonly known as the pied heron, is a small heron species.

It measures 43–55 cm (17–22 in) in total length.
Adult Plumage
Adults have dark slaty wings, body, and crested head, along with a distinct white throat and neck. Its overall appearance is similar to that of the white-necked heron.
Adult Weight and Sexual Dimorphism
On average, males weigh between 247–280 g (8.7–9.9 oz), which is heavier than females that typically weigh 225–242 g (7.9–8.5 oz); males and females have similar outward appearances.
Immature Plumage
Immature birds do not have the adult's crest or dark head colouring, and may resemble smaller versions of the white-necked heron.
