About Carollia sowelli Baker, Solari & Hoffmann, 2002
Taxonomic Naming
Carollia sowelli is a bat species first described by Baker, Solari & Hoffmann in 2002.
Size Comparison
This species is slightly larger than Carollia brevicauda, but smaller than Carollia perspicillata.
Dorsal Fur Characteristics
It has long dorsal fur that is similar in color to that of C. brevicauda, but it lacks the dark brown tips that would make the species' medial light band conspicuous. Because of this, Carollia sowelli has an overall lighter appearance than C. brevicauda.
Neck Fur Banding
The species has a broad, dark band of fur on the nape of the neck, which contrasts strongly with a broad whitish band located distal to the dark nape band. This neck banding pattern is similar to the pattern seen in C. brevicauda, and is distinct from the pattern found in C. perspicillata.
