The sooty barbet, whose scientific name is Caloramphus hayii, is a bird species that belongs to the family Megalaimidae.
Geographic Distribution
This species can be found in Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Sumatra. It was previously present in Singapore, but is now extirpated there.
Habitat
Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
Taxonomic History
The sooty barbet was split from the brown barbet (C. fuliginosus), which is an endemic species native to Borneo.
