About Psilopogon mystacophanos (Temminck, 1824)
Species Identification
This species, the red-throated barbet (Psilopogon mystacophanos), shows distinct differences in plumage between males, females, and juvenile individuals.
Adult Male Plumage
Adult males are primarily green, with red markings on the crown, throat, and a spot located below the throat. They also have a black spot above each eye, a yellow patch on the crown, and blue coloration near the eyes and on the lower portion of the throat.
Adult Female Plumage
Females are similar to males in overall appearance, but lack most of the distinct facial coloration that males have.
Juvenile Plumage
Juvenile red-throated barbets look similar to females.
Size and Weight
Full-grown adult red-throated barbets measure 23 cm (9.1 in) in length, and weigh between 60 and 95 g (2.1–3.4 oz).
