This species is a succulent subshrub native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa, and it has been introduced to other regions outside its native range. Its magenta flowers open in early spring. The plant produces silvery green leaves that grow in pairs, with each new pair of leaves stacking on top of the previous pair.
