About Aratinga finschi (Salvin, 1871)
Finsch's parakeet, with the scientific name Aratinga finschi (Salvin, 1871), is approximately 28 cm (11 in) long and weighs between 135 and 175 g (4.8 to 6.2 oz).
Sexual Dimorphism
Males and females have identical appearance.
Adult Plumage
Adults are primarily green, with a yellowish tint to their underparts. They have a red forehead, which is referenced in one of the species' alternate English common names, and scattered red flecks on other parts of the head. The edge of the wing and the outer underwing coverts are also red, often with an orange hue. The greater underwing coverts are yellow, while the undersides of the flight feathers and tail are olive yellow. Most individuals have some red coloring on their thighs.
Adult Soft Parts
The eye is orange, surrounded by bare white skin, and the bill is horn colored.
Juvenile Traits
Juveniles look similar to adults, but they have little to no red on the head and no red on the thighs. Juvenile Finsch's parakeets have gray eyes.
Geographic Range
Finsch's parakeet ranges from southeastern Nicaragua, across both the Pacific and Caribbean slopes of Costa Rica, and along Panama's Pacific slope as far east as the Azuero Peninsula.
Habitat Types
It lives in many types of semi-open to open landscapes, including woodlands, the edges of denser forest, secondary forest, ranchlands, agricultural areas with tree groves, coffee plantations, and towns.
Elevation Range
Its elevation range extends from sea level up to 1,800 m (5,900 ft).
