About Wilhelmsia physodes (Fisch. ex Ser.) Mc Neill

Wilhelmsia is a monotypic plant genus belonging to the family Caryophyllaceae. The genus contains exactly one species: Wilhelmsia physodes (Fisch. ex Ser.) Mc Neill. This species is native to Alaska, northern Canada (specifically Yukon and the Northwest Territories), and Russia. Wilhelmsia physodes is distinct from other members of the Caryophyllaceae family due to its large, inflated ovary. This ovary develops into a round, purple capsule that can reach up to 10 mm in diameter. The capsule is partially septate, meaning it is internally divided into 3 compartments, with 2 outer teeth associated with each compartment. Wilhelmsia physodes is a perennial herb that spreads via underground rhizomes. Its stems are mostly prostrate, with the exception of the upright flowering stalk. Its leaves grow up to 15 mm in length. The plant’s sepals are green with purple tints, and its petals are white.
