Taxonomy and Classification
Damara red-billed hornbills (scientific name Tockus damarensis (Shelley, 1888)) are a small species of African hornbill.
Bill Structure
They have curved bills that range from dark to bright red, with nostrils located on the upper beak, close to their eyes.
Head and Neck Plumage
Their heads are covered in greyish-white feathers, with dark grey feathers running along the back of the head and the upper half of the neck.
Wing Pattern
Like all red-billed hornbills, the wings of Damara red-billed hornbills are covered in circular patterns of white feathers surrounded by black or dark brown feathers.
Tail and Leg Characteristics
Their tail feathers are black on the outside and white on the inside, and their legs are short, grey, and end in small semi-sharp claws.
Belly Plumage
Their bellies are usually greyish white, but may also be pure white.
Geographical Distribution
Damara red-billed hornbills are distributed in southwestern Angola and northern Namibia.
Habitat and Roosting
They nest and rest in local trees within grasslands or savannahs.
