Taxonomy and Common Names

Stegastes arcifrons, commonly known as the island major or Galapagos gregory, is a species of damselfish belonging to the family Pomacentridae.

Distribution Range

It is native to the eastern Pacific Ocean, where its range extends from Costa Rica to Cocos Islands, Malpelo Island, and the Galapagos Islands.

Habitat and Depth

This fish lives on rocky and coral reefs at depths between 1 metre (3 feet 3 inches) and 20 metres (65 feet 7 inches).

Population Status

It is common across much of its range, and its overall population is considered stable.

Conservation Assessment

No specific threats to this species have been identified, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature currently assesses it as a species of Least Concern.
