About Stachys tenuifolia Willd.

Identifying features of Stachys tenuifolia Willd. include a root system made up of a taproot and rhizomes, which allows the species to spread and form vegetative colonies. It is primarily pollinated by long-tongue bees, and produces four black nutlets. Short-tongue bees and white flower flies also visit the plant, with white flower flies feeding on its pollen. Because its foliage has a bitter taste, it is not commonly eaten by mammalian herbivores. This species is distributed from Eastern Canada to central and eastern USA. It is classed as a wetland indicator species, and can be found in wooded brownwater river bottoms and along brownwater river edges.
