Scientific Classification and Endemism

The Nepal gray langur, scientifically named Semnopithecus schistaceus, is a gray langur endemic to the Himalayas.

Geographic Range

Its confirmed range covers Nepal, far southwestern Tibet, northern India, northern Pakistan, and Bhutan, and it may also occur in Afghanistan.

Elevation Habitat

It inhabits forests located at elevations between 1,500 and 4,000 metres, which is equal to 4,900 to 13,100 feet.

Eastern Distribution Limit in India

In India, its easternmost distribution reaches the Buxa Tiger Reserve in northern West Bengal, extending at least as far as the Rydak river.

Behavior and Diet

Nepal gray langurs are both terrestrial and arboreal, and they feed on leaves.

Recorded Weight

The heaviest langur ever recorded was a male Nepal gray langur, which weighed 26.5 kilograms, or 58 pounds.
