Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, commonly known as Baikal skullcap or Chinese skullcap, is a species of flowering plant in the Lamiaceae family.

Native Distribution

It is native to China, Korea, Mongolia, and the Russian Far East and Siberia regions of Russia.

Adverse Effect Reports

There have been several reports and small case series of acute liver injury with jaundice that develop 1 to 3 months after starting herbal or dietary supplements containing S. baicalensis.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Status

This species is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as huángqín (Chinese: 黄芩).
