About Scrophularia grandiflora DC.
Scrophularia grandiflora DC. is a perennial, rhizomatous, pubescent herb. Its stems grow up to 1.80 m (5.9 ft) tall, and branch at the base. It has pinnatisect leaves. Its inflorescence is usually 24–110 cm (9.4–43.3 in) long. The base of the inflorescence holds a group of 10 flowers; the rest of the inflorescence has clusters of 2 to 6 flowers, arranged oppositely, and occasionally alternately. The petals are pinkish-flesh colored, while the upper lip is purplish pink. Anthers are yellow, sometimes with bluish margins. The staminode is purple. The seed capsule is ovoid, very hard when mature, and brown or greenish brown. Seeds are brown-blackish. This species is endemic to central west Portugal. It occurs mainly in the districts of Coimbra and Leiria, and partially in Santarém and Lisbon. It grows on slopes and path shoulders, in open empty spaces, and at forest edges. It prefers shady, humid, somewhat disturbed locations. It is most commonly found at 400–500 m (1,300–1,600 ft) altitude, but also occurs at much lower elevations. Most of its population is concentrated in the area around Coimbra.
