The species was first described from Ponmudi hill, after which it is named, though later research confirmed it has a wider distribution across the southern Western Ghats.

It has been found at elevations around 1000 meters above sea level.
Documented Localities
Documented localities include the Wynaad, Idukki, and Thiruvananthapuram districts of Kerala, and Valparai in Tamil Nadu.
Canopy Perch Behavior
Individuals have been observed perched on branches 8 to 15 meters above the ground, in the upper levels of the forest canopy.
