The Chattahoochee slimy salamander, scientifically named Plethodon chattahoochee, is a salamander species that belongs to the Plethodontidae family.

Endemic Range

This species is endemic to the Appalachian Mountains of the United States, and its distribution is restricted to Chattahoochee National Forest and Nantahala National Forest, located in the states of Georgia and North Carolina.

Its natural habitat is temperate forest.

Taxonomic History

Previously, this species was grouped under the northern slimy salamander (P. glutinosus), before being recognized as a separate distinct species.

Overlapping Species Ranges

The range of the Chattahoochee slimy salamander narrowly overlaps with the ranges of the northern slimy salamander, the Atlantic Coast slimy salamander (P. chlorobryonis), and the southern Appalachian salamander (P. teyahalee), while it widely overlaps with the range of the red-legged salamander (P. shermani).

Hybridization

It is confirmed to hybridize with the latter three of these overlapping species.
