Common Name and Endemic Status

Plestiodon dicei, commonly called Dice's short-nosed skink, is a species of lizard endemic to Mexico.

Etymology and Type Specimen

The species was named to honor Lee R. Dice, who collected its holotype in 1930 during a faunal survey in Sierra de San Carlos, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Historical Taxonomy

For many decades, Plestiodon dicei was classified as a subspecies of Plestiodon brevirostris.

Distribution in Northeastern Mexico

This skink is found in northeastern Mexico, within the Sierra Madre Oriental across the states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, and Tamaulipas.

Isolated Populations

Isolated populations of the species also exist in the Sierra de San Carlos and the Sierra de Tamaulipas.
