Nomenclature
The ringed storm petrel (also called Hornby's storm petrel, with the scientific names Hydrobates hornbyi and Oceanodroma hornbyi (G.R.Gray, 1854)) is a seabird that ranges through the Humboldt Current off the coasts of South America.
Appearance
This species is a very distinctive member of the storm petrel family, with a dark cap, white face and underparts, a forked tail, and a black band across the chest.
Distribution
It is relatively common in the seas off Peru, Chile, and Ecuador.
Etymology
This species is named after Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby.
