About Nestegis montana (Hook.f.) L.A.S.Johnson

This tree currently classified as Nestegis montana (Hook.f.) L.A.S.Johnson was previously published under the synonym Notelaea montana. It is commonly called narrow-leaved maire, and is native to New Zealand. Its natural range extends from the northern tip of the North Island near Kaitaia, south to the northern end of the South Island around Nelson, where it is much less common. It grows from coastal to high-elevation forests, and is often found growing beside streams, on ridgelines, or on steep slopes. This tree can reach a maximum height of 15 metres, and grows a dome-shaped canopy. It bears long, linear leaves that measure up to 100 by 10 millimetres; this leaf trait distinguishes it from other New Zealand species previously placed in the genus Notelaea. The Latin specific epithet montana refers to mountains, or originating from mountains.
