Nomenclature and Taxonomic Classification
Microhyla heymonsi, which is also called the dark-sided chorus frog or the Taiwan rice frog, is a species of narrow-mouthed frog.
Distribution Range
Its distribution covers northeastern India, southern China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia extending south to the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, and Great Nicobar Island.
Type Locality
This species was originally described based on specimens from Taiwan.
Body Size General
Like other microhylids, Microhyla heymonsi is a small frog.
Sexual Size Dimorphism
Males have a snout-vent length of 16–21 mm (0.6–0.8 in), while females reach 22–26 mm (0.9–1.0 in).
Coloration and Markings
Its dorsal surface is pinkish or greyish, with a black lateral band that runs from the tip of the snout to the groin, and completely covers the sides of the head.
Habitat
Microhyla heymonsi lives in a range of disturbed areas and secondary vegetation.
Breeding Habitat
It breeds in temporary rain puddles, paddy fields, ditches, marshes, and slow-flowing streams.
