Kalophrynus baluensis is a stocky, short-legged frog.
Size
Females reach 39 mm (1.5 in) in snout–vent length, while males are slightly smaller.
Coloration and Camouflage
Its brown colouration provides ideal camouflage in the leaf litter of the forest floor, its native habitat.
Habitat Type and Elevation Range
The natural habitats of this species are montane oak-chestnut forests, found at elevations between 1,300 and 1,800 m (4,300–5,900 ft) above sea level.
Microhabitat
Individuals are typically encountered on the forest floor.
Reproductive Traits
Male advertisement calls have been heard some distance from water, which suggests the species may breed in phytotelmata.
Threat Status and Protected Occurrence
There are no major identified threats to Kalophrynus baluensis, and the species is confirmed to occur within Kinabalu National Park.
Distribution Size
Even so, the total area of its distribution is relatively small.
