About Megophrys montana Kuhl & Van Hasselt, 1822
Species Size
Megophrys montana is a relatively large frog species. Males of this species can reach a snout-vent length of 92 mm (3.6 in), while females reach up to 111 mm (4.4 in).
Distinctive Morphology
As its common name hints, this frog has "horns": the upper eyelids feature distinct horn-like extensions.
Confirmed Distribution
This species is confirmed to occur only on Java, Indonesia, and may possibly also be found in western Sumatra.
Misidentification Records
All previous records of Megophrys montana from areas outside this range, stretching from southeastern Thailand through Sumatra, the Natuna Islands, and Borneo to the Philippines, actually refer to other related named or as-yet-unnamed species.
Elevation Range
It can be found from near sea level up to at least 1,200 m (3,900 ft) in elevation.
Habitat
Megophrys montana lives on the forest floor in both primary and secondary forests, and can also be found in plantations to some degree.
