About Littorella uniflora (L.) Asch.
Nomenclature and Common Names
Littorella uniflora (L.) Asch., commonly known as American shoreweed or shoreweed, is an aquatic flowering plant species.
Native Distribution
It is native to the Azores, Morocco, Iceland, the Faroes, and most of Europe excluding the dry southeast region of the continent.
Habitat
It primarily grows fully submerged in nutrient-poor freshwater habitats.
Submerged Photosynthetic Traits
When submerged, it takes in most of its carbon dioxide through its roots, and uses a combination of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and C3 carbon fixation for photosynthesis.
Photosynthetic Response to Water Level Changes
If water levels drop and expose its roots, it stops using CAM photosynthesis.
