About Limnonectes hascheanus (Stoliczka, 1870)
Limnonectes hascheanus is a species of frog in the Dicroglossidae family. It is found across the Malay Peninsula, ranging from southern Myanmar and Thailand to Peninsular Malaysia. Whether it occurs on the Andaman Islands is still unconfirmed.
Size Characteristics
This is a small frog species: when measured from snout to vent, males reach 19–25 mm (0.75–0.98 in) in length, while females are 21–25 mm (0.83–0.98 in) in length.
Historical Life Cycle Claim
Prior work reported that the life cycle of Limnonectes hascheanus follows direct development, meaning there is no free-swimming tadpole stage and eggs hatch directly into tiny, fully formed frogs.
Taxonomic Attribution of Observations
However, the original observations of this development pattern were made outside the confirmed range of L. hascheanus, and they most likely actually apply to the related species Limnonectes limborgi.
Corrected Life Cycle Findings
Careful later observations have confirmed that L. limborgi has free-swimming, endotrophic larvae, and this life cycle pattern is likely also true for L. hascheanus.
