Heterotetrax rueppelii (Wahlberg, 1856)

Size

Rüppell's korhaan is a small bustard, measuring only 60 cm (24 in) in length.

Head and Neck Coloration

Its head and neck are grey, with black stripes running down the throat (these stripes are less distinct on females), through the eye, and along the sides of the neck, and it has white cheeks.

Body and Leg Coloration

The upper part of its body is sandy brown, while the underpart is white. Its legs are sandy yellow-brown.

Geographic Range

Rüppell's korhaan is native to southwestern Africa, specifically occurring in Angola and Namibia. It is one of thirteen native bird species found in western Namibia.

Habitat

This bird inhabits low-rainfall areas including deserts, plains, and savannahs, where its exceptionally well-developed senses play a major role in its survival and safety.

Specific Occurrence Locations

It is commonly found in the Namibrand Nature Reserve, at Mirabib and Ganab in the Namib-Naukluft Park, at Bloedkoppie, and in the area surrounding Spitzkoppe.
