Common Name and Body Shape
Commonly known as the highfin goby, this species (Gobionellus oceanicus (Pallas, 1770)) has a very long, slender body with a rounded snout.
Lateral Streak Characteristics
Along the sides of its body, it has a series of lightly marked lateral streaks formed by pigment cells called melanophores. These streaks are not always present, are inconsistently paired on the two sides of the body, and are usually indistinct, with some stripes often missing entirely.
Geographic Range
In terms of distribution and habitat, the highfin goby’s range extends from Virginia (and rarely as far north as New Jersey) south to southern Brazil.
Habitat and Temperature Tolerance
It can live in both freshwater and brackish water environments, with water temperatures between 11 °C and 29 °C.
