The Arabian sand gazelle, scientifically named Gazella marica Thomas, 1897, is also commonly called reem (Arabic: ريم).
Native Range
It is a gazelle species that is native to the Arabian Desert and the Syrian Desert.
Current Wild Distribution
Currently, this species survives in small, isolated wild populations in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and southeastern Turkey. Small populations may also occur in Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, and Syria.
Wild Population Size
The total estimated wild population of Arabian sand gazelles is less than 3,000 individuals.
Captive and Reserve Population
Far more individuals exist in captivity, protected reserves, and breeding programs, with the number possibly exceeding 100,000.
