Size and Distinguishing Traits
It is typically the most richly coloured of all reed buntings, and has the pinkest legs and bill during the winter season.
Adult Male Plumage
Adult males have a dark back and chestnut-coloured upperparts, with black and buff striping across the breast and sides of the body. They have a brown nape, and the sides of the neck are whitish.
Adult Female Plumage
Females have a buffy submoustachial area and throat, black malar stripes, and a dark brown crown marked with pale streaking.
Juvenile Plumage
Juveniles have a pale greyish-brown central stripe running along the crown, and a yellowish-brown rump.
Vocalizations
The species' calls can be transcribed as 'sur-swee-ik' and 'tik'.
