This species is distributed across Africa, ranging from Mauritania and Senegal east to south-western Sudan, and south to north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Habitat
Its natural habitats are dry savannah, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, and subtropical or tropical dry lowland grassland.

It was previously classified as the same species as the cinnamon-breasted bunting.
